What is Reiki?

Pronounced Ray-Key it is a sacred, gentle way to promote healing.  The Japanese word “Rei” stands for higher knowledge, spiritual or universal consciousness.  “Ki” means life energy.  The general definition used in the Western culture is Universal Life Force Energy.

Reiki is an ancient hands-on healing art that brings balance, harmony, healing, and pain relief to the body, mind, and spirit.  It encourages balance in health and deep healing on every level.  Reiki reduces pain and accelerates healing and strengthens the immune system.  It enhances personal awareness, positive thinking and wellness.  It focuses the body’s energy for deep relaxation, inner peace & reduces stress.  Reiki helps to clarify perception & intuition and balances the organs and glands.  It clears the body of toxins and releases old issues and trauma.  Reiki promotes  a natural Self-healing and is complimentary with other medical therapies.

Where does Reiki come from?

Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered Reiki in the early 1900’s after a life dedicated to research and education of healing others.  He began a vision quest on top of Mount Kui Yama , where on the 21st day he had a very spiritual experience where he received the Reiki symbols and attunements, which lineage is now known as the Usui System.   Prior to his death he asked Dr. Hayashi to preserve the Reiki tradition.  He later taught this tradition to a Japanese-American woman named Hawayo Takata who then brought it back to the United States where she has initiated 21 Master Teachers.

What can I expect from a Reiki session?

A Reiki session usually lasts about an hour.  Shorter sessions are also common as well as spot treatments or localization.  The person will lie down on a massage table, fully clothed.  A session may also be performed in a comfortable chair.

You will probably be  asked to remove your shoes and jewelry and it is important that you wear comfortable clothing.  The practitioner will say an Intention and then follow with the treatment where the practitioner will place his or her hands in certain positions on the body.   After the session it is important to drink an increased amount water in order to help flush the toxins out of the body.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is an ancient form of hands on healing using the Universal energy that is all around us.  During the session the practitioner places his or her hands on a person, the touch is light and there is no pressure.  Reiki is not a massage; therefore there is no manipulation of tissue or muscles so the hands remain still.  The practitioner will hold their hands in various positions – about 2 to 3 minutes for each position.   The hands may also be held 1 to 2 inches above the body to obtain the same results.  The Reiki energy flows from the crown of the practitioner through their hands to you. The person draws to them the amount of energy that they need for healing at the time of their treatment.

What benefits does a person get from Reiki?

Most people report a deep state of relaxation and a feeling of well being.  Many people report feeling relaxed and energized and that they feel very rested.  Regular use of Reiki leads to an increase in general vitality and well being and a sense of inner peace and it promotes the healing process.

Is Reiki affiliated with a religion?

Reiki is not a religion or philosophy nor does it require beliefs in any doctrine, although many practitioners are deeply spiritual they may conduct their treatments in a manner that incorporates their own belief systems.

Is Reiki Harmful?

Reiki is the Universal energy that is all around us.  It is a positive and healing energy.  A person draws the amount of energy to them that is necessary for their healing.   Reiki is noninvasive, safe and effective and will never do harm, therefore, it always works for the Highest Good of the individual.  Reiki works on all aspects of the body; spiritual, mental, emotional and lastly the physical.  The effects are subtle and gradual, but once you become accustomed to the feeling of receiving Reiki you will begin to notice the subtle energy shifts your body makes as you move through your day.

Spiritual healing and energy work are not a substitute for traditional medical treatment, if you have a serious health imbalance please see a doctor or other appropriate professional, and make Reiki a complementary healing part of a complete health care program.
