The Top 10 Myths About Hypnosis:

1  Does the hypnotist have power and control over the client?

Hypnosis is a normal state of mind, one which most people go in and out of every day. Hypnosis will only work as much as the client is willing to allow it.  All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.  (Please refer to What is hypnosis.)

2.  Do hypnotists work miracles?

If there ever was a magic wand that could help you change anything about your life, your health or your behavior, this might be it.  Many wonderful things happen during a session.  Sometimes they happen very quickly, sometimes they reveal themselves over time.  Hypnosis will only work to the degree to which a client is willing to allow it.  All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

3.  Can one remember everything verbatim when under hypnosis?

We do access memories during hypnosis but there is no guarantee that the memory is the truth.  Memories are based on a combination of fact, fantasy and perception and are often distorted over time.  Memories that are accessed during hypnosis are not any more accurate or reliable than memories recalled at any other time.

4.  Can only certain people can be hypnotized?

Hypnosis is a natural state the people experience every day without realizing it, like daydreaming.  It may seem that it is easier for some people undergo hypnosis but it does not meant that they lack the ability to be hypnotized.  Several factors are involved, most of all being the willingness of the individual.  There are some situations where it is not advisable for people to pursue hypnosis and that is for mentally or emotionally challenged individuals.

5.  Is one asleep or unconscious during hypnosis?

The actual definition of hypnosis is a relaxed, focused state of concentration.  'hypnosis' is named after Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep but you are neither asleep or unconscious.  When you are asleep or unconscious you are unaware of what is going on around you, while in hypnosis, your awareness is highly focused that you completely aware of everything happening around you.

6.  Do you have to relaxed in order to experience hypnosis?

Relaxation often accompanies hypnosis but it is not a requirement.  While in hypnosis you are certainly capable of feeling a full range of emotions including being tense, anxious, or relaxation.

7.  Can hypnosis make me do something against my will?
Absolutely not. This is one of the biggest myths of all. Stage hypnotists seem to make people do strange things while hypnotized, but the truth is that these people are doing these things because they have a desire to be outrageous.  You will never do anything, or accept any suggestion that violates your morals or values.

8.  What if I don't wake up?
No one has ever got stuck in a state of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention not an unconscious one.  If the hypnotherapist left the room, or if you were so relaxed that you fell asleep you would wake up naturally, or your subconscious mind would detect that there is no voice guiding you and bring you to conscious awareness.

9.  Can hypnosis make me tell secrets?

Not at all. You will not divulge any information that you would not ordinarily divulge. You always have a choice, and your brain does not stop functioning or reasoning.

10. Can people lie under Hypnosis?

Yes.  Just as you will not divulge any information you don’t feel comfortable with, you can also lie under hypnosis.  Hypnosis is not a truth serum.  Anything that you would normally do out of hypnosis you will do while in hypnosis with intention or unconsciously.
