Where did Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy begin? The history of Hypnosis is ancient, dating back to tribal practices when it was used for healing and seeking sacred knowledge and spiritual intervention. The scientific history of hypnosis began during the 1700's with a Viennese physician by the name of Franz Anton Mesmer. It was James Braid, a British surgeon, that came up with the term hypnosis, named after the Greek god of sleep, Hypnos. After further studies he realized that people were not asleep when experiencing hypnosis and tried to change the name, but it didn't take. Thus, further perpetuating one of the Myths about hypnosis. The study of hypnosis advanced with several well known individuals such as, Freud, Pavlov, and Jung. Until 1958 when Hypnotherapy was accepted and acknowledged for its medicinal value by the American Medical Association.
What is Hypnotherapy Hypnosis is not a therapy in itself but a therapy is conducted in hypnosis, which is known as hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is a state of relaxation and concentration at one with the state of a heightened awareness induced by a suggestion. It is a natural trance state, like daydreaming, when the mind is relaxed and focused, where time passes very quickly, usually accompanied by good feelings of deep relaxation of the mind and the body. When undergoing hypnotherapy, the client is conscious and aware, but is open to suggestion. They cannot be induced to do anything against their will. Hypnotherapy is a treatment that is based on the concept that the mind and the body work in unison. By using hypnosis the therapist aims to trigger the body's mental and physical self-healing processes that lie in the subconscious by gently releasing blocks and fears, and create a new inner belief that will initiate changes in the way you think, feel and behave.
